7 heavenly miles in Overpeck County Park, New Jersey - Maratonistas

7 heavenly miles in Overpeck County Park, New Jersey

I was in New Jersey in a business trip for two weeks, and as every trip I make, I had my running shoes on the luggage. This time I came with my Saucony Kinvara 3 since I wanted to have a multi purpose shoe, you know, be able to run with it as well as to take it for a ride downtown.

The first week passed and I was only able to run on the hotel’s treadmill. It is not something that I love to do, but given the hotel’s location, it was the only alternative. Driving around during the week I noticed a gorgeous park with a trail, Overpeck Creek close to Downtown Englewood. Quickly I saved the location in my phone so I can find it easily. Saturday came and I was able to drive somewhere to put some good miles on my legs. After a 10 mins drive from the hotel I parked my car and had the beautiful view of one of the sides of the park, picture below.

It was 7:30AM and as usual I turn on my Garmin 910XT so it can pick good GPS signal and made my routine stretch session, around 10 minutes. Ready to run, quickly noticed that weather was cloudy and a bit cold, perfect to run! By cold I mean 70’ish degrees, since I’m used to run in temperatures over 90 degrees back home in Puerto Rico. Passing the first mile I felt really slow, in fact I was. For my surprise the Garmin marked circa 10:00 min/mile, way too slow compared to my first mile back home. Once sweat started to flow (after 1.5 miles) I started to feel better and was able to lower the pace to my usual 8:30 min/mile.

Running through the park was an amazing experience. There was a lot of people at that time, many of them walking, practicing yoga, doing cross-fit at the track and even kayaking. As time passed my legs started to feel loose, so an occasional sprint was inevitable.

By the time I was returning to my car I had run nearly 6.8 miles. As many of you, I hate to see incomplete miles in my GPS, so I decided to run a bit further to complete 7 miles. 7 miles that tasted like heaven, weather was excellent and the trails were amazing.

For those of you nearby Englewood, NJ, below it’s the map of the Overpeck Creek park.

As if it was not enough, I just found a 5k in Liberty State Park, NJ. Sugartown Charity 5k Run/Walk in Jersey City, NJ. I am looking forward to running it. This will be my comeback race, since my last 10k back in May 5th. Will let you know how it goes.
